Đạo Phật đã tạo nên tín ngưỡng và văn hóa khắp nơi trên thế giới. Đạo phật ngày nay đang được giảng dạy, được viết thành sách, được thảo luận và trao đổi chủ yếu bằng tiếng Anh ở các viện nghiên cứu Phật học ở khắp các châu lục. Các tu sĩ Phật giáo và các cư sĩ phải giao tiếp quốc tế với nhau chủ yếu sử dụng ngôn ngữ tiếng Anh. Các quốc gia có đạo Phật là quốc giáo cũng sử dụng Anh ngữ để giao tiếp trong việc thực tập và nghiên cứu Phật giáo.

Day 1 - The monk lives in a small pagoda 

Vocabulary 1

1. a pagoda/ a temple/ a monastery

2. a monk’s residence/ residence for monks/ a statue of Buddha

3. a bell/ a wooden bell/ a cushion/ an alms bowl

4. peaceful/ restful/ mindful (adj.)

5. the monk/ the nun

1. Intransitive verbs

An intransitive verb does not need a direct object
Vị tu sĩ sống trong ngôi chùa nhỏ:
                                            The monk lives in a small pagoda.
Hoa đẹp tàn phai:                Beautiful flowers fade.
Thân giả hợp tan rã:            Affected bodies disintegrate.
Đức Phật thiền tịnh trang nghiêm dưới cội bồ đề:
                                            The Buddha meditates quietly and solemnly
                                            at the bodhi tree. 

2. Transitive verbs

A transitive verb must have a direct object.
Họ di chuyển bức tượng Phật:
                                                      They moved the statue of Buddha.
Hiện tại chư Phật độ chúng ta:      In the present Buddhas enlighten us.
Năm vóc gieo xuống đất:               We touch the earth.
Chúng con thực tập từ bi:              We practice loving-kindness and compassion.

3. Linking verbs

A linking verb links the complement to its subject.
“to be” is the main linking verb.
Verbs that can be replaced with “to be” and don’t change the meaning of the sentence are linking verbs.
Other linking verbs:             to become/ run/ turn/ grow/ get
                                           to look/ sound/ smell/ taste/ feel
                                          to seem/ appear/ keep/ remain/ stay
Tâm của anh ta rất an bình:            His mind is very peaceful.
Hiện tại Pháp thâm sâu:                  In the present the Dharma is profound.
Vị tu sĩ chứng đạo quả A La Hán:   The monk becomes enlightened as to Arhat.          
Hãy hạnh phúc bền lâu:                   Stay enduringly happy.              

4. Verbs with two objects

Way A: V + D.O. + to/for + I.O.
Way B: V + I.O. + D.O.
Verbs with two objects:      
            to write/ send/ mail/ wire/ transfer/ deliver
            to buy/ purchase/ sell/ pay/ repay/ return
            to give/ give away/ offer/ grant/ donate/ dedicate/ award/ present
            to hand/ hand in/ turn in/ submit
            to rent/ lease/ loan/ lend/ owe
            to take/ bring/ pass
            to make
            to teach/ show/ explain
            to read/ tell/ sing/ serve/ introduce
Vị sa di trao cho vị trụ trì cái bồ đoàn:
            The novice has given the cushion to the abbot.
Chúng con đem công đức này hồi hướng khắp tất cả:
            We transfer this merit to all living beings everywhere.       
Kham nhẫn mang lại hạnh phúc và sắc đẹp cho bạn:
            Endurance brings happiness and beauty to you.
Đức Phật luôn dạy chúng ta về cách hành thiền:
            The Buddha always teaches us the way to meditate.
Vị trụ trì mua bình bát cho vị sa di:        
            The abbess bought an alms bowl for the novice nun.

5. Verbs with Bare Infinitive

A bare infinitive verb is a verb without “to”.
            to make/ let/ help/ have
Vị Đại đức để cho vị sa di thỉnh chuông:                       
                                                The Most Virtuous Monk lets the novice invite the bell.
Họ để tôi chăm sóc vị trụ trì:    They let me take care of the abbot.
Tôi bắt vị sa di thực tập chánh niệm:    I make the novice monk practice mindfulness.
Chúng tôi làm cho mọi người đến với nhau:     We make everybody come together.

Exercise 1:     

Translate this gatha into English. 

KỆ KHAI KINH
Phật pháp cao siêu rất nhiệm mầu
Trăm ngàn muôn kiếp khó tìm cầu
Con nay nghe được chuyên trì tụng
Nguyện rõ Như Lai nghĩa rộng sâu.

Gatha Before Chanting

The Buddha’s teachings are sublime and marvelous.
It’s difficult to search for in hundreds or thousands world cycles.
Today we can learn them, so give our whole mind to keep chanting
And vow to know the wide and deep meaning of Tathàgata.

(1) The Buddha’s teachings:       Phật pháp
(2) World cycle:                           kiếp
(3) Tathàgata:                              Như Lai
(4) Gatha before chanting:          Kệ khai kinh
